This did not stop the American. To meet with the pontiff, he bought a ticket for a tour of the Vatican Museums. This is a complex of several luxurious buildings, completely lined with masterpieces of art. It is here that the famous Sistine Chapel and many world-famous paintings are located.

The incident occurred during an inspection of the Chiaramonti Palace, where the famous sculptures collected by Pope Pius VII in 1800-1823 are exhibited. The tourist publicly demanded a meeting with Pope Francis. He was refused, after which he knocked over one of the  busts on the floor, began to run away from the guards and knocked another statue off the pedestal.

The tourist was detained and taken to the carabinieri department. It is reported that in the United States he was repeatedly convicted of hooliganism. The statues were heavily damaged. One has a broken nose.
