In one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy, the alarm is sounding: E. coli has been discovered and spreading on the beaches.

We are talking about the region of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy. It is located south of Milan and Venice. This area is famous for both historical cities (Bologna, Modena, Parma) and seaside resorts on the Adriatic Sea: Ravenna, Rimini, Cesenatico, Chivia.

Experts have studied about 100 local beaches. On 28 of them, the concentration of E. coli was so high that it is dangerous to humans. Bacillus strains can cause gastroenteritis, inflammation of the genitourinary system, meningitis (in children) and other dangerous diseases.

Red flags have been raised on all local beaches. Tourists can sunbathe and go out to sea on a boat, but you can’t go into the water and swim.
